14 papers reflect on how the wielders of power, be they religious, social or political, shape the discourses that justify their power within the framework of a society or a specific group, and how space participates in these discourses. Studies consider evidence from epigraphy, the archaeological record, and literary sources.

Rituals, Collapse, and Radical Transformation in Archaic States explores the role of ritual in a variety of archaic states and generates discussion on how the decline in a state’s ability to continue in its current form affected the practices of ritual and how ritual as a culture-forming dynamic affected decline, collapse, and regeneration of the state.Chapters examine ritual in collapsing and regenerating archaic states from diverse locations, time periods, and societies including Crete, Mycenean and Byzantine Greece, Mesopotamia, India, Africa, Mexico, and Peru. Underscoring similarities in a variety of archaic states in the role of ritual during periods of threat, collapse, and transformation, the volume shows how ritual can be used as a stabilizing or divisive force or a connecting medium between the present to the past in an empowering way. It also highlights the diversity of ritual roles and location in similar situations and illustrates how states in close proximity and sharing many cultural similarities can respond differently through ritual to stress and contrast the different response in rural and urban settings.Through detailed, cultural specific studies, the book provides a nuanced understanding of the diverse roles of ritual in the decline, collapse, and regeneration of societies and will be important for all archaeologists involved in the important notions of state "collapse" and "regeneration".

Informed by the global history of slavery, Kostas Vlassopoulos avoids traditional approaches to slavery as a static institution and instead explores the diverse strategies and various contexts in which it was employed. In doing so he offers a new historicist approach to the study of slave identity and the various networks and communities that slaves created or participated in.

"This volume contains approaches from ancient history and Greek philology to demonstrate the broader potential applications of the resource concept developed by the Tübingen SFB 1070 ResourceCultures; this allows for the use of poetry as evidence in the field of ancient history, since it can be used to identify contemporary evaluations.- taken from the back cover"

The classicist and historian Alan Cameron (1938-2017) was, among other achievements, one of the scholars who most contributed to the refoundation of late-antique studies. In this tribute W. V. Harris and Anne Hunnell Chen have brought together fourteen contributions that cover a broad range of historical, literary, and art-historical topics, running from the first century AD to the ninth. Some contributions concern Cameron's own favourite themes (the Greek Anthology, the Historia Augusta, circus factions, the transmission of texts), while others seek to assess his work and its impact. Other papers branch out from his concerns to discuss slavery, simony, and hospitals.

Seasonality — the passage of time and the change in the environment across the course of a year — is universally recognized as having a major impact on the relationship between people and nature, yet it has rarely been examined as a topic of study in its own right. In the past, many areas of life were constrained and furthered by the cycle of the seasons, from the production of crops and grazing of animals in rural areas, to dress and diet, urban development, and religious activities. This volume offers an in-depth study of the impact of the seasons on the Graeco-Roman world, drawing on the archaeology of seasonality to open up new perspectives into the temporal dimension that underpins human activity, as well as offering fresh insights into space and spatial practices in the ancient world. The contributions draw on a wide range of archaeological evidence to explore the archaeology of the seasons from a number of different perspectives, including economic strategies, catastrophic events, religious activities, iconography, and the role of the individual. Together, they offer a pioneering new approach to classical archaeology that it is hoped will further our understanding of the temporal dimensions to archaeological evidence.
